Why Asbestos Surveys Are Required for Buildings Built Before 2000

In New Zealand, asbestos was widely used in building materials until it was phased out around the year 2000. Because of this, WorkSafe NZ regulations require that any building constructed before 1 January 2000 must be assessed for asbestos before any work that could disturb the building materials is carried out. This includes maintenance, renovations, or demolition.

  • Purpose: Locate ACMs that could be disturbed during normal activities, maintenance, or minor works.

Refurbishment Surveys

Required before any refurbishment, repair, or intrusive maintenance work.

  • Purpose: Identify ACMs in areas where alterations will occur, ensuring fibres are not accidentally released.

  • Includes:
