Asbestos Bulk Analysis

Accurate Identification. Informed Decisions.

Asbestos Bulk Analysis is the laboratory testing of building materials, dust, or soil to determine the presence, type, and form of asbestos fibres. It is a crucial first step in any asbestos management, removal, or refurbishment project.

At Aerem, we use polarised light microscopy (PLM) with dispersion staining — a method compliant with AS 4964 — to analyse bulk materials and provide clear, reliable results you can act on.

Why Is Bulk Asbestos Analysis Important?

Bulk asbestos analysis is the foundation of any safe and legally compliant asbestos management process. Without testing, it is impossible to confirm whether a material contains asbestos — and guessing is not an option.

Navigating Asbestos Compliance with Expertise

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre once widely used in products like:

The History of Asbestos – Why Bulk Analysis Matters Today

Asbestos rose to prominence in the late 19th century due to its unique physical properties — including fire resistance, durability, sound insulation, and affordability. It was widely used across industries in cladding, insulation, coatings, roofing, flooring, and more.

Its use expanded well into the 20th century until the severe health risks of airborne asbestos fibres — including cancer and respiratory diseases — became undeniable. This led to a global shift in regulation, with many countries, including New Zealand, banning or heavily restricting its use.

However, due to its extensive historical use, asbestos remains present in thousands of older buildings and infrastructure projects across Aotearoa.

That’s why asbestos bulk analysis is now a critical first step in managing property risk. It provides laboratory confirmation of whether a material contains asbestos — allowing for safe planning, legal compliance, and the protection of workers and occupants.

Regulatory Compliance – Asbestos Bulk Analysis

Under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 (NZ), identifying asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) is a legal requirement before starting any work that may disturb building materials — including refurbishment, demolition, or maintenance.

To comply, bulk sampling and laboratory analysis must be carried out by a competent person, and the results used to:

  • Confirm the presence or absence of asbestos
  • Develop or update the site’s Asbestos Register
  • Support the creation of an Asbestos Management Plan (AMP)
  • Inform safe work procedures and removal strategies

Aerem conducts bulk sample analysis in line with AS 4964:2004 – Method for the Qualitative Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples, using BOHS P401-qualified analysts and strict chain-of-custody procedures to ensure accuracy and legal defensibility.

Compliance isn’t optional — it’s your duty of care.

Partner with Aerem to meet your legal obligations with confidence and clarity.

FAQs

What is asbestos bulk analysis?

Asbestos bulk analysis is a laboratory test used to determine whether a material contains asbestos. A small sample of the suspected material is examined under a microscope to identify asbestos fibres and their type (e.g. chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite).

Yes. Under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016, a PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) must identify asbestos in the workplace, particularly before any work that might disturb building materials. Bulk analysis helps you comply.
