What is asbestos 4-stage clearance?

A 4-stage asbestos clearance is a formal process designed to ensure that asbestos removal has been carried out correctly and that the area is completely safe for people to return to. This step-by-step clearance procedure is required by WorkSafe NZ and must be completed before a clearance certificate can be issued. The process involves four critical stages:

Initial Site Check
Our licensed assessors confirm that all asbestos removal activities are finished, the area is dry, and all necessary records are in order. We’ll also verify that any tools and materials used during the removal process have been properly taken out of the containment area.
2.
Detailed Visual Inspection
We thoroughly inspect the entire site—including surfaces, corners, cavities, and difficult-to-access areas—to ensure there are no visible signs of asbestos residues or leftover materials. This step is essential for identifying any remaining contamination before air testing begins.
3.
Air Quality Testing
Once the visual inspection is complete, we perform advanced air monitoring using specialised equipment to test for airborne asbestos fibres. To meet clearance standards, the air must contain fewer than 0.01 fibres per millilitre. This ensures the environment is safe for people to re-enter.
4.
Final Review & Clearance Certificate
In the final stage, we review all reports, test results, and inspection notes. Once everything passes compliance, we issue an official clearance certificate confirming the area meets WorkSafe NZ standards for safe reoccupation.
